April 14-17, 2003 within the framework of the CEP academic network “Social Transformations in Comparative Perspective” Professor PAL TAMAS (Director of Institute of Sociology, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest) will give a cycle of lectures for MA and PhD students of Sociological Faculty, V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University “THE NEW ORDER. “AN OVERDUE TRANSIT PHASE” OF THE POST-SOVIET SOCIETIES UNDERGOING TRANSFORMATION”

Late modernity - General conditions. Holistic social engineering revisited. Diversity of transformation. Transition ortodoxy and its critics. Post-communist transformation and post-war reconstruction. Neo-liberal, evolitionary and institutional theories.

State practices – Weak and strong states. “Soft”and “hard” trajectories of transition. The myths of the civic state. Democracy and economic growth.

Elites and/or classes in transformation – The republics of mandarins? Bureaucrats and bureaucracy in post-socialism. Reconstruction of class relations?

Small victimology - Controversies around “losers”. Perceptions of inequalities. Legitimation of the social order and inequalities.

"The Rating System of Control and Evaluation of Students' Knowledge as an Element of Modernization of Sociological Education"

The 15-th of March, 2002, at Kharkov V.N. Karazin National University School of Sociology within the framework of the Megaproject an International science seminar "The Rating System of Control and Evaluation of Students' Knowledge as an Element of Modernization of Sociological Education" was conducted.

The aim of the seminar is to learn the experience of using rating system of control and estimation of students' knowledge in ukrainian and foreign higer instututes, where sociological disciplines are tought. The discussion is about:

• Innovational educational technologies and rating system of control and evaluation of students' knowledge.
• Pecularuties of modular education and rating system.
• Specific aspect of rating system use in conditions of multilevel preparation of sociologists-professionals.
