Being only 12 years old, the School of Sociology is among the youngest at Kharkiv V.N. Karazin National University.

Although training in Sociology was introduced at the beginning of the XX th century, it was only 70 years later that the University began graduating professional sociologists. It became possible due to scientific and personnel potential of the laboratory for sociological researches, that was created in 1963 and Department of Sociology open in 1980 and led by professor Jakuba Y.A. at School of Economics. That's the Department that provided training of experts in sociological specialization implemented at School of Economics. The first alumni of the Department were graduated in 1983. In 1988 the School of Economics organized the Sociology Section and in 1990 the School of Sociology was founded. The first Dean of School of Sociology became the today's rector of the Kharkov V.N.Karazin National University professor Vil' S. Bakirov

The School employs 30 lecturers, among them 6 full professors, 13 associate professors and 11 instructors; the total enrolment is over 500 undergraduate and graduate students including international students. Training is available in full-time, part-time (correspondence) and distance teaching modes.

The School offers over 50 various courses including Philosophy, General and Social Psychology, Political Sciences, Economic Theory, Mathematics, General Sociology, History of Sociology, Methodology and Organization of Sociological Research, Conflict Theory, Political Sociology, Theory and Practice of Social Work, Administrative Consulting, Marketing, Sociology of Youth, Sociology of Culture, Methods of Computer Procession of Social Information, etc.

The School's best students receive honorary grants named after renowned scientists, such as M. Weber and M. Kovalevsky.

Professional work of graduates of faculty first of all is connected to research and teaching work in high schools and colleges, licea and schools, the sociological centers, social services of authorities, the centres of employment, social services of armed forces etc. School graduates work also in the field of advertising and marketing, in press, on radio and TV, in state and local management authorities. Scientific activity of the School includes numerous empirical researches concerning transformational processes in Ukraine, in particular, changes of social structure, problems of high education development, students' life patterns, electoral behaviour etc.

The School hosts a computer laboratory with access to the Internet, an Academic Resource Centre and a library.

The School provides postgraduate courses for candidate's and doctor's degrees. The School has a specialized council for conferring candidate's and doctor's degree in Sociology in three areas of research: Theory and History of Sociology, Sociology of Culture, Science and Education, and Sociology of Management.

The School runs numerous research seminars and international conferences on various aspects of Sociology and Social Work.

The trainings of future specialists of sociology, political science, social work, political sociology, media communications is conducted by experienced teachers, among them are:
